For many low-income residents of the Bay Area, escalating housing costs and the lack of entry-level positions stand as roadblocks in the path toward even a modest standard of living.  Since 1966, Community Action Marin (CAM) has been working to build bridges from poverty to economic stability.  Now one of Marin’s largest social service agencies, CAM focuses on early education and child development, job and economic development, basic human needs and mental health.  Programs include Head Start, cash and food assistance for sufferers of HIV/AIDS, a meal service for low-income children, an extensive childcare program with homework assistance, outreach services for those with substance issues and the mentally ill, and job and career services that facilitate the training and hiring of homeless and at-risk people.  John H. Harrington currently serves as Vice President and Past President of Community Action Marin.

With suburban sprawl threatening green spaces and wildlife habitats across the United States, the need for parks and other natural spaces has never been greater.  Now two-thirds toward completion, the 400-mile Bay Area Ridge Trail will ultimately wind its way around the San Francisco Bay, bringing hikers, bikers and equestrians through public parklands and watersheds of the Bay Area greenbelt.  Aside from providing magnificent views, cultural sites and urban attractions, the finished trail will allow all the residents of the Bay Area to discover their unique ecosystem.

For many seniors, the arrival of physical and mental weakness is coupled with a loss of independence and a sense of uselessness.  Participants in the San Francisco Adult Day Services maintain the autonomy of living on their own while benefiting from a daytime therapeutic environment that increases the quality of their lives.  Transportation is provided to and from the centers, which offer physical, occupational, and speech therapy, creative expression activities, group outings and nutritious lunches.  San Francisco Adult Day Services provides assistance to adult day care centers throughout the Bay Area.

The California State Parks Foundation provides substantial support to special projects, training of personnel, outreach programs and general support of the California State Parks System, which to state budget constraints, needs outside support.  The California State Parks system comprises 273 parks, and has over 80 million people visit them each year.  Over 60% of Californians believe outdoor recreation is important to the quality of life.  John Harrington serves as Treasurer and Board Member.

Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly is an organization that organizes volunteers to provide outreach, advocacy, and companionship to isolated elders throughout the year.  Often, the recipients of these services are people who do not have family or friends to visit or help with the trials of everyday living that become difficult for the elderly.  Last Christmas over 400 volunteers made over 600 home visits in San Francisco alone. The San Francisco chapter is part of a nationwide organization.

Sojourner Truth House is a Wisconsin based facility that provides shelter, safety and support for domestic violence victims while restoring their dignity and self-worth.  Sojourner Truth House has been instrumental in changing the attitudes and laws associated with domestic violence in the community and continues to be a leader in the effort to provide access to programs that offer a chance at a violence free life for every person.
